First Beachcomber Busking Comp goes alright

The streets of Geraldton came alive in early December 24’ with music, laughter, and community spirit as the Beachcomber Busking Competition took center stage in our CBD. Presented by Regional Sounds, a not-for-profit supporting regionally based musicians, this inaugural event was a reverberating success.

A Day of Music and Community

Ten busking stations in the Geraldton CBD created a musical trail, with local community, retailers and eateries enthusiastically supporting the event. Coinciding with the onshore visit of over 1,000 passengers from the Westerdam cruise ship, the Geraldton city centre was filled with music from end to end, from a program of live performances featuring 13 talented and unique busking acts.

From soulful acoustic tunes to lively instrumentals, a ditty-writing Christmas Elf and a Victorian living statue, the competition showcased the region’s diverse talent. Solo artist Aeva Rigby was presented with the People's Choice Award, with Mackenzie Dodd earning special commendation for their impressive debut performance.

Boosting Local Business

The influx of cruise ship passengers and the competition’s energy gave a boost to the start of the festive season. Cafés, restaurants, and retailers benefited from increased foot traffic and reasons to stay, with many commenting they hope to see the event become an annual tradition.

Looking Ahead

Supported by the City of Greater Geraldton, the event also partnered on the upcoming 'Buskers Guide to Gero,' set to launch in early 2025. The Beachcomber Busking Competition set a high standard for future events, celebrating the arts while boosting the local economy and community ties.

Congratulations to all who made this day unforgettable! Here’s to more events that bring joy, creativity, and opportunity to Geraldton.
